This poem is seen through the eyes of the poet who describes a situation whereby the persona, probably a young lady, who is captivated by the quiet eyes of a young man.The lady believes she sees in those eyes mirroring the sadness within him and begging herfor love and kindness so as to give him happinies.
The second stanza reveals that the lady was not wise enough to listen to the advice of never to be on good terms of those who only seek fun and pleasure. As a result, she gets entangled in a difficult situation where numerous questions cannot be answered.
The poet ends up in the third stanza with a bit of further advice, that is one should be extra certain that a nice-looking petrson is also one who possesses a decent character. This is to ensure that one does not not lose at the game of chance i.e. the game of life, though losing out one's heart(love) once or twice is understandable.

HE HAD SUCH QUIET EYES
He had such quiet eyes
She did not realise
They were two pools of lies
Layered with thinnest ice
To her,those quiet eyes
Were breathing desolate sighs
Imploring her to be nice
And to render him paradise
If only she'd been wise
And had listened to the advice
Never to compromise
With pleasure-seeking guys
She'd be free from "the hows and why"
Now here's a bit of advice
Be sure that nice really means nice
Then you'll never be losing at dice
Though you may lose your heart once or twice
She did not realise
They were two pools of lies
Layered with thinnest ice
To her,those quiet eyes
Were breathing desolate sighs
Imploring her to be nice
And to render him paradise
If only she'd been wise
And had listened to the advice
Never to compromise
With pleasure-seeking guys
She'd be free from "the hows and why"
Now here's a bit of advice
Be sure that nice really means nice
Then you'll never be losing at dice
Though you may lose your heart once or twice
SYNOPSIS IN THE MIDST OF HARDSHIP
The poem IN THE MIDST OF HARDSHIP is about the experience of a group of villagers who go out to search for a lost albino buffalo. They spend a whole day and night braving a terrible flood, amidst dead animals and floating pieces of bark.In spite of their extreme discomfort and failed mission, they surprisingly remain calm, hopeful and in high spirits.
The first stanza tells us about the return of a number of villagers in their soaked clothes, hungry, with scratches on their hands and wounds on their legs. They go straight to the stove as they must be feeling hungry. In spite of their extreme discomfort, they show no signs of despair.
The second stanza relates what they go through the night and the day before. They brave the terrible flood waters among bloating carcasses and floating tree barks looking for their son,s albino buffalo which is never found.
The third stanza reveals that they are born in poverty. They have more or less accepted their fate and have learnt never to sight or complain about their lot in life. They take the harsh realities of life philosophically and go out living life leisurely.

TOPIC : IN THE MIDST OF HARDSHIP
At dawn they returned home
Their soaky clothes torn
And approached the stove
Their limbs marked by scratches
Their legs full of wounds
But on their brows
There was not a sign of despair
The whole day and night just passed
They had to brave the horrendous flood
In the water all the time
Between bloated carcasses
And tiny chips of tree barks
Desperately looking for their sons
Albino buffalo that was never found
They were born amidst hardship
And grew up without a sigh or a complaint
Now they are in the kitchen, making
Jokes while rolling their cigarette leaves
Their soaky clothes torn
And approached the stove
Their limbs marked by scratches
Their legs full of wounds
But on their brows
There was not a sign of despair
The whole day and night just passed
They had to brave the horrendous flood
In the water all the time
Between bloated carcasses
And tiny chips of tree barks
Desperately looking for their sons
Albino buffalo that was never found
They were born amidst hardship
And grew up without a sigh or a complaint
Now they are in the kitchen, making
Jokes while rolling their cigarette leaves
